Main stream resolution is higher than sub stream resolution for local video streaming, output HD video display on a local monitor also record HD video on your local network NVR. Main stream resolution are 2560x1920. Delivering real time 30fps which allows HD video stream recording without missing anything important.
On IVMS4200 if you have 4 cameras or less you may use the Main stream to provide you a nice display seeing a nice clear and fluid picture and it doesn't give you a tremendous issue with bandwidth problems

Now if you are looking to provide streaming for more than one camera and you want to make sure everything is visible via web monitoring you would want to bring the cameras to a sub stream view.
Sub stream offers low/standard definition video primarily for low bandwidth situations. Sub stream may not transmit real time video., but transmit key frames and sub frames to deliver video. Sub stream can also decrease the network bandwidth burden , which in turn to achieve smooth video monitoring in low bandwidth situation
